Smithfield Drover

The Smithfield Drovers dog was a Lurcher outcross itself about 200 years ago.  So those who claim outcrossing means they can't still exist are clearly barking up the wrong tree!  Rogue is living proof that the Smithfield Drovers Lurcher blood is still with us. This dog is the product of my lifetimes selective breeding programme to save the Smithfield Drovers dogs genes from extinction. My brother and I gathered up the last remnants of the old fashioned strains that our extended families had kept for work for over 800 years. This had been achieved by a continuous on going creative breeding program that involved perpetual refreshing of the gene pool by outcrossing whilst retaining the working abilities by selective line background breeding. A lot of the modern Lurchermen misunderstand what we mean and confuse the outcrossing with the old fashioned Lurchers we are using it to preserve.
Basically that's like mistaking the side salad for the main meat course.

The selection process is the most important ingredient in any Lurcher breeding project. Rogue is living proof that we have achieved what the cynics said could not be done. He is a perfect duplicate of the Smithfield dogs both in looks  and abilities. (Both athletic and mental) He has the temperament, instincts, intelligence, scenting ability and natural nous they were famous for. He doesn't look like your typical sighthounds yet he beat average greyhounds over 150 yards, he could repeat that all day, could stay a long course if he had to,  and had the agility to run rings round many a whippet. With a strike like a snake. Brain to run cunning and box and control the prey. I remember a farmer about 40 years ago asking me what sort of dog is she about old Bluey ( an ancestor Rogue throws back to) ; he never even realised he was looking at a Lurcher. No wonder the poachers considered them invaluable.
